JANE ATKINSON [Watermark 2006] aims to reflect contemporary issues that arise from human intervention with the landscape being both apolitical and visceral. It is about the experience of being at one with nature, the process and experience of walking, seeing, listening, wondering, feeling and locating, and primarily about Place. Having been awarded BA (Hons) in Heritage and Visual Arts in 2003, and completed MA Contemporary Visual Arts in 2005, research by artistic practice has led to a diverse range of work which incorporates the two disciplines. Using water as a theme, and operating within the natural environment, Jane endeavours to represent human activities and the nature of the local environment, through its water. Exhibitions include Trace Elements 4: The Lab at EEK, at the The Old Grammar School Arts Centre (Redruth) in 2006, and Gunpowder Plot at the 'More Cornwall' artist led show at an old gunpowder works and quarry in Cornwall (Ponsanooth) in August 2007. More recent work involves a calendar-work and short film Bogtalk following the changing nature of a spring and small stream on a farm in Cornwall. In 2007 Jane presented a research paper Trace Elements: Mapping by Water at The Global Environment Conference at The Oval (London) for the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Engineers. Previous work has involved interventions on glaciers and site-specific installations in Iceland, looking at the history of water through mineral deposits in melt-waters highlighting issues surrounding accelerated global warming. Jane Atkinson’s work aims to reflect contemporary issues that arise from human intervention with the landscape being both apolitical and visceral. It is about the experience of being at one with nature, the process and experience of walking, seeing, listening, wondering, feeling and locating, and primarily about Place.

PAUL CHANEY [Embark: Ferry Art 2007] has been a practising visual artist for the last 15 years, exhibiting locally, nationally and internationally. His personal practise is an investigation into the paradigms that define our relationship with Nature. The work generally challenges the notion of anthropocentrism and asks us to re-assess our attachment to progress. Paul has undertaken numerous personal and community projects. In 2000 he was funded to direct ‘Bike Art’ project that saw a sustainably transported show (pedal powered) tour from Cornwall to London. Paul then went on a six month research project to Ecuador and Peru, investigating perceptions of modernity in indigenous tribes people in the Amazon basin. Paul collaborated with South American artists and exhibited his work in both countries. Paul was a founder member of Level 2 Artist-led Initiative who are currently collaborating on the project Wharf the first stage of which was exhibited at Falmouth Arts Centre in July 2005. At the moment he is co-directing the independent research project known as F I E L D C L U B, a radical experiment in low impact living.
STACEY EBEL [Lizard Project Research & Development] is an artist with extensive experience managing arts education projects and workshops with many different organisations, working with participants with a diverse range of needs and abilities. Her own artistic practice takes the form of photography; she facilitates educational workshops using photography and other art forms. Ebel was commissioned to undertaken initial research into developing a successful education element for the Essence of the Lizard project.
BEN ELLIS [Watermark 2006] has been practicing photography for over ten years
and in 2000 he graduated from University College Falmouth.
His major body of work, entitled ‘The River:
A Journey from Source to Mouth’, explored the impact
man has on the river Fal by revealing what is seen above
and below the water line as the river makes it’s
journey from a pure source to a saturated mouth. This
work was then exhibited at the Tom Blau gallery London,
in the summer of 2000. After this he helped out with the
underwater photography course at the college, instructing
students in the art of scuba diving as well as giving
technical and creative advice. Since that time he has
been undertaking mainly commercially based portraiture,
advertising and design work and in 2004 returning to
Cornwall, working with companies such
as Camel Valley Vineyards, Allen & Heath, Absolute
Design, Hall for Cornwall to name a few. Alongside
this work, Ben continued to explore his fascination with
water, completing works entitled ‘Silent Pool’
and ‘Gunpowder Valley’. This personal work
has a strong connection to the environment, he wants to
take people on a journey to the unusual, something altogether
different from the everyday. Exploring the underwater
environment has enabled me to express some of these themes
and my ongoing projects are incorporating the underwater
realm with the land above.

BECKY JOINER [Watermark 2006] completed her BA(Hons) degree at University of Plymouth in 1997, culminating in the show Home Life at Queen Street (Exeter). After a period working in marketing in London and Sydney she has established photography as her profession. In 2005 she exhibited in the group show Still Stories at the Arts Centre Falmouth and soon afterwards completed MA Photography at University College Falmouth. Her series of work Memory Vision explored the concept uniqueness of seeing and was exhibited at Dray Walk Gallery (London) during September 2005. Other commissions and exhibitions include Shire Hall (Bodmin), Maritime Museum (Falmouth), Yam Parlour (Penzance) and JAM (Falmouth). Joiner’s practice often examines ways of seeing and questioning the habitual beliefs that are established through our memory and vision. She believes that it is through routine or expectation that we begin to stop seeing our surroundings in any detail, and through our memory or past experiences when our vision is pricked into seeing anything specific. Through her photographic practice Joiner ask questions about what we are expected to see and to consider the different ways of seeing the familiar.
